During the Russian Empire, the city was the administrative center of the Ozurgeti Uyezd in the Kutaisi Governorate. On December 26, 1923, a railway line was established, connecting Ozurgeti to the rest of the country. It was renamed "Makharadze" on July 9, 1934, in honor of the Georgian Bolshevik Filipp Makharadze. The city reverted to its original name on May 15, 1989.
